India: Mumbai's Dharavi slum
Mumbai's Dharavi slum is a settlement of over a million people spread over 1.7 sq KM in the heart of the city. Densely populated, it comprises over 80 communities, each with its unique identity, speaking 30 different languages and practicing 6 different religions, . With over 15,000 little hutment factories and recycling facilities, it is the country's economic powerhouse, and contrary to popular belief, over 80% of the population is employed. I visited the slum and met some of its residents in 2004. I went back in 2019 to teach photography to some of its young residents. The resulting images were exhibited in Mumbai and Montreal.
